Indigenous Culinary Instructor (On-Call, Event-Based)

About Us

The Chef’s Experience is a small, locally-owned business that offers immersive culinary workshops and experiences focused on culture, community, and creativity. Our mission is to celebrate the diverse culinary traditions that shape our region, with a strong emphasis on Indigenous food knowledge, techniques, and ingredients.

Position Overview

We are seeking an on-call Indigenous Culinary Instructor to lead monthly, event-based cooking classes rooted in Indigenous culinary traditions. This is a casual, seasonal position—you will be called upon for specific workshops and community-based culinary events, typically once per month or as needed.

This is an excellent opportunity for a chef, food educator, or knowledge keeper who is passionate about teaching and preserving Indigenous culinary heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead hands-on cooking classes and demonstrations, teaching participants about traditional and contemporary Indigenous cooking methods and ingredients

  • Design culturally appropriate menus for each session, incorporating seasonal and locally sourced foods where possible

  • Engage and educate participants on the cultural significance, history, and stories behind the dishes

  • Ensure safe food handling and maintain a clean, organized workspace before, during, and after events

  • Collaborate with The Chef’s Experience team to plan events, source ingredients, and prepare materials

  • Represent The Chef’s Experience with professionalism, hospitality, and cultural respect

  • Optionally contribute to community events, speaking engagements, or food-focused storytelling

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous culinary traditions and ingredients (First Nations, Métis, Inuit – all welcome)

  • Experience teaching, leading workshops, or working in a professional or community kitchen

  • Ability to work independently, adapt to event formats, and communicate clearly with diverse audiences

  • Food Safe or equivalent certification preferred

  • Availability to work occasionally, on-call, and mostly evenings or weekends

  • Comfortable with public speaking and facilitating group learning

  • Passionate about cultural preservation, community engagement, and food sovereignty

Compensation

  • $25/hour, based on experience and role in the event

  • Compensation includes time for prep, instruction, and clean-up

  • Ingredients will generally be provided by the chef’s experience

  • Reimbursements may be offered in specific cases where instructors need to source ingredients.

Additional Information

  • This is a casual, non-permanent position, offered on an as-needed basis, typically once per month

  • You will be contacted a month in advance of each event for availability

  • Employment does not guarantee ongoing hours or regular scheduling
